It's about time we started judging sides by their ability instead of reputation

It's been a while since I last blogged, I've been busy getting on with Uni work which is pretty intense this year with it being my final year. I've got to work my arse off and the last month or so I've been running around like a blue arsed fly trying to organise a project.

As well as the excitement with a new series of Fresh Meat on, it has been a bit of topsy turvey few weeks for Football. For a start Latics have actually come good following my previous rant, we've had not just Racist abuse from the Serbian fans but the bullying mentality because they lost, we've had a fan who apparently already had a banning order run on the pitch and attack Chris Kirkland, hell we've even had our very own Crofty wrongly accused of racially abusing a ball boy.

The episode of the Football League Show which followed the Sheffield United game was a joke, I understand the need for viewers but I don't know whether to laugh or cry when people turn their nose up at our club for various non-Footballing issues. The said episode of the Football League show were expecting to broadcast an easy home win for the mighty Blades, but instead they had to show an incredibly inaccurate representation of what actually happened on the pitch. We had 15 shots on goal and they had 5 yet they showed every effort on goal they had including a lame cross-shot which Bouzanis had covered and Sky sunk one depth lower by claiming that we were "under the cosh". I don't understand what goes through these broadcasters heads, those who attended the game could clearly see what really happened so what shame did the BBC have in showing the unfancied side giving a team at the top of the table a tough game?

To be fair it's not always that bad and it's even not all that bad on the BBC, I was listening to 606 a month or so ago which was hosted by Robbie Savage. You can say what you like about Robbie on the pitch but as a broadcaster I feel he's a breath of fresh air compared to some of the bland pundits we get on TV these days. Anyways this particular caller on 606 was a Derby fan who had just lost to Huddersfield and he went on to say "we should be beating sides like Huddersfield" to which Mr Savage replied "why?" Then the Derby fan replied "because we're Derby and they're Huddersfield". Now most Latics fans will probably remember numerous keyboard warriors from Huddersfield over the years who have had the exact same attitude towards us as the Derby fan had towards them. So Savage just let rip at the Derby fan telling him not to judge the fortunes of his team on the basis of club reputation and previous history, I found it hilarious for two reason. One being that someone saw Huddersfield as a small club which would of probably angered those who believed they had a god given right to beat us in recent seasons and two the Derby fan got put in his place. The fact of the matter is that we should be judging teams by their ability as 11 men on the pitch, (along with maybe the subs and a coaching team) and not because of things like previous history, size of fanbase or how many times they get shown on TV. I know those factors sometimes help enhance a teams prospects (I certainly back Sheff United to get Automatic Promotion) but to some fans and even broadcasters it appears to be a means in which to write a team off and I believe that Dickov is  one of those managers who uses it to his advantage in his team talk and I just hope he is able to keep the good fortunes at the club going. Plus if you're a fan who believes they have a god given right to beat a team based on your clubs stature, the rest of us think it's hilarious to see you fail.

May I also take the time to congratulate those who walked from Oldham to Sheffield in aid of the meningitis trust. You've done the club proud!!
